Exceptional Benefits For Kids

Rated 5 out of 5
February 9, 2019

My kids have been dancing with Lizelle for a little more than a year now. As Lizelle keeps the groups of kids who start together in the same class, I have had the opportunity to observe not only my own kids’ progression but also others in the same class. (I usually sit queitly with a book against a wall).
To start with I was amazed at how quickly and effectively the kids learn the dances and new moves and become comfortable with their bodies. Even those who struggled and were clearly uncomfortable to start with, have made amazing progress. I have also seen postures improve! Even more amazing and gratifying is to see the social development. Of course some were sociable to start with. But even those not so comfortable with social interaction who avoided any eye contact and speaking at all costs in the beginning, are now engaging in conversations with eye contact and real joy. I am truly amazed. Occupational therapists understand how movement stimulates and “opens” the brain to improve all kinds of functions and in a enjoyable manner. They know that learning and overcoming challenges happens most effectively if the activity is also fun. It is amazing and actually humbling to see this in practice. The benefits are so much more than meets the eye. They are not merely learning some dance steps to use at the next ball, Matric farewell or a cousin’s wedding. The dancing really impacts their development and confidence on so many levels. Truly a positive.
The fact that everyone has to change partners and dance with everyone else also has definite advantages. The fact that no one is allowed to opt out of a dance or say no (to a dance) also removes the very real teenage fear of rejection and forces them to interact and dance with different people in a safe environment with a known set of rules.
Thank you Lizelle!
